These are from a shoot we did last August; one of those get-togethers when relatives from all over meet up. We got the go-to pictures; the ones where everyone is at attention and smiling. When it comes to any family photography session, those kind of portraits must haves. Of course here in Saskatchewan, if we want pictures like that, we usually try to get them in the summer or fall so as to have good weather for outdoor shooting. On this particular day I thought it would be nice to get some other pictures as well. The bottom two are of a more spontaneous nature. Yes we do need the formal portraits as represented by the first two but I think it's also good to have the other kind. When everyone is simply smiling, like they do in most portraits, it puts you at arm’s length from the subjects. However, when you add more spontaneity it draws you closer to the people in the picture, makes you feel like you know better. At least, that's how I feel about it.
