Sometimes I think it might be better to live in a city. Where I am is here in Outlook, an hour south of Saskatoon. But the city is where most of the work is. For that reason I will not charge to travel to shoot any wedding in and around Saskatoon. If I’m serious about wedding photography (and that I am), than that seems like the best policy.
Being in Saskatoon would also let me have more association with my fellow photographers from whom I can learn. Instead, I live out here. Feels a bit isolated sometimes. I am, and always will be a country guy, so I’m not going anywhere any time soon.
Thank goodness for the internet. Through sites like the [b] school and Photography Mentor I can have some association with my fellow wedding photographers. The days of cut-throat competition when Photographers would jealously guard their secrets and considered their colleagues the enemy are over. If any are still like that today, they do themselves a lot of harm. A rising tide raises all ships and if we help each other, instead of fighting it out, we can improve both our businesses and the product we deliver to our clients. This is a golden age for photography and wedding and portrait photography is a part of that.
Still, sometime I think it might be better to live in a city…
